Blog #6: It’s the little things….November 4, 2011

It’s the little things…

It is the time of year when parents and students think there can’t be anything else to learn for the show.  But actually, this is the most critical time as Carmelgears up for BOA Indy Regionals and Nationals.  As the directors in the photo appear to be indicating, it IS about the little things now. How well the band and guard stay in their rows, angle their flags and instruments, keep in time with the drum majors all matters in the minutia as Carmel competes against the best marching bands in the nation. Carmel is SO close to achieving their goals for this season.

Sometimes life moves at such a pace that we all forget to focus on the little things.  My daughter is now a driver. Since she is the third one of mine to learn to drive I had more excitement than anxiety at the prospect of her driving!  She has her own transportation and heads out early each morning.  I get to see her arrive disheveled at the end of a long day of practices as she dives into to her homework only to repeat the process again the next day. As I looked at her last night I thought, I miss the time I had with her as I drove her to and from practice. The conversations about school, friends, band and the unexpected stops at Walgreen’s for more bobby pins and Gatorade!  It wasn’t any big event I felt was being missed it was just the little moments of time together.

For those band members who were around for the 2010 show, you know it was about “stopping to smell the roses”.  It is easy to forget how fortunate we are to have our children involved in such a wonderful organization with a group of adults who truly invest in their potential.  Remind your kids for these last few performances, it really is about the little things – both on and off the field. Every student must strive for perfection in the show.  Every parent must strive to enjoy the time with their kids. GoCarmel!
