The Carmel High School Color Guard is an award-winning program of excellence. Being involved in this rewarding activity provides teenagers with the benefits of work ethic, time management, self-esteem, friendship, and fun. Our high school guard program has grown drastically in recent years. We have become established as a nationally known talent, and our members work incredibly hard putting long hours into their commitment to excellence. We would like to continue to grow our program by building community awareness and participation.
During the summer and fall, the color guard rehearses and performs with Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds. This nationally known, award-winning marching band is currently 280+ members. Rehearsals begin in June and the season continues through mid-November, culminating at the Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championships. The CHS marching band has won numerous awards in BOA competitions throughout the years, including: BOA National Class AAA Champion in 2001; National Finalist every year since 1996; 2012 and 2005 BOA National Champion; and Regional Champion at Toledo, St. Louis, Oxford, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Louisville, and Kettering, Ohio Regional Competitions. The Marching Greyhounds have won Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Marching Band Championships in 2012, 2002, 2001 and 1990. They have also had the privilege of performing in the 2014 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; the 2004 London New Year’s Parade; and on the USS Missouri with Hawaii’s Royal Band in 2007.
In November, the program focus turns to winter guard. Winter guard is the sport of indoor color guard. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Winter guards can be found in high schools, middle schools, some universities, and also some independent organizations.
The Carmel Guard program supports 3 winter guard ensembles, the JV, A & World Guards, providing varying levels of the guard experience to our middle school and high school members. The Carmel World Guard is a 3 time World Champion in the Scholastic World Class division of Winter Guard International (WGI) and a 7 time State Champion in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association (IHSCGA) circuit. Since 2010, the Carmel World Guard has finished no lower than third in the World Championships.
